The comedy play Peter Pan Goes Wrong was written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields of the Mischief Theatre company. They also wrote The Play That Goes Wrong (2012). The show's August 2022 announcement stated that the same ensemble would move on to perform at Vancouver, Canada's The Arts Club Theatre Company. The start date was September 8, and the end date was October 16, 2022. The musical moved to Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 17, 2023, for a limited run of 16 weeks beginning on April 19, 2023, opening night. The announcement was made on January 5, 2023. A short-term appearance by Neil Patrick Harris was confirmed on April 3, 2023. The addition of Ellie Kemper to the cast for a period beginning on June 8, 2023, was first revealed.
