Shen Yun is a performing-arts and entertainment company based in New York that does tours around the world. Shen Yun produces large-scale dance performances and what would be described as a mild-form of symphony concerts.
The Shen Yun shows, as the name suggests, features Chinese classical dances alongside folk dances from the ethnic groups from the Asian countries. All performances are accompanied by a live orchestra composed of both Chinese and Western instruments. The actors and production staff do their training at the company’s headquarters in Cuddebackville, Orange Country, NY.
The name Shen Yun loosely translates to ‘the beauty of divine beings dancing.’ The company describes its endeavors as reviving the 5,000 years of Chinese culture. The Communist Party of China supposedly destroyed the culture they are trying to bring back to life. The company was founded in 2006 by expatriates from China who practice Falun Gong, a contemporary religious movement.
For six months annually, Shen Yun Performing Arts tours more than 130 cities across North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia. Interestingly, the company is yet to perform a show in Mainland China or Hong Kong.
