The Play That Goes Wrong is a play by Jonathan Sayer, Henry Shields, and Henry Lewis of Mischief Theatre Company. In 2012, it was premiered at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London and later on, in 2013, moved to Trafalgar Studios. Mark Bell directs it. The play opened on September 14, 2014, at the Duchess Theatre in West End. The cast included Jonathan Sayer as Dennis, Nancy Zammit as Annie, Henry Shields as Chris, Charlie Russell as Sandra, Henry Lewis as Robert, Greg Tannahill as Jonathan, Dave Hearn as Max, and Rob Falconer as Trevor. Robert Surace designed the costumes for the characters of the play. The play began a UK tour at Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, Darlington, along with 17 other venues from January 2014 through June 2014. In January 2017, the play started its second UK tour from Theatre Royal in Bath and ended the tour at Cambridge Arts Theatre in August. The third UK tour started from January 2018 through October 2018. On April 2, 2017, it opened on Broadway. Original London cast featured the play production. After 27 previews and 745 performances, the production was closed on January 6, 2019. The play started touring North America from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 2018. Original tour cast included Evan Alexander Smith as Chris, Jamie Ann Romero as Sandra, Brandon J. Ellis as Trevor, Angela Grovey as Annie, Yaegel T. Welch as Jonathan, Scott Cote as Dennis, Ned Noyes as Max, and Peyton Crim as Robert. Also on tour as understudies were Michael Thatcher, Jacqueline Jarrold, Blair Baker, and Sid Solomon. The play won “Best New Play” in the WhatsOnStage Award ceremony (2015), “Best New Comedy” in BroadwayWorld UK Award ceremony (2014), and again “Best New Play” in Laurence Olivier Award Ceremony (2014). The Broadway production of The Play That Goes Wrong won the 2017 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Scenic Design Of A Play and 2017 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design Of a Play. An English journalist and theatre critic, Quentin Letts, gave the play five stars out of five.
