Jill Scott Information
Jill Scott (April 4, 1972) is an American singer-songwriter, poet, actress, and model. She is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Scott plays music genres, including soul, neo-soul, hip-hop, spoken words, and R&B. She attended Temple University and planned to become an English Teacher of the high school. She even served three years as a teacher's aide but soon became disillusioned with her teaching career. Scott dropped out of college to pursue her career in music.
Jill Scott began her career performing as a spoken word artist at live poetry readings where she used to perform her work. Eventually, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of the Roots discovered her and invited her to join the band. "You Got Me" was the single and a result of their collaboration, which earned them a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo. Scott debuted during one of the live shows by Roots and later collaborated with Will Smith, Common, and Eric Benet. She was also the first artist to be signed to Steve McKeever's 'Hidden Beach Recordings' label.
Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was the debut album by Scott released in 2000. This release was followed by Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004), The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), The Light of the Sun (2011), and Woman (2015). Some of the past concert tours performed by her are Words and Sounds Tour (2001), Sugar Water Festival Tour (2005), The Real Thing Tour (2008), Summer Block Party (2011–12), An Evening with Jill Scott (2011–12), and Live in the Moment Tour (2018).
Scott also appeared in several films including Dave Chappelle's Block Party, Why Did I Get Married Too?, Baggage Claim, With This Ring, Love Beats Rhymes, and a few more. Some of the television shows that featured her as well are Seemore's Playhouse, Black Panther, Being Mary Jane, and many more.
Jill Scott is the winner to three Grammy Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards, four Lady of Soul Awards, and was nominated for several others.
