The Philadelphia 76ers are members of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. They were founded in 1946 and formerly known as the Syracuse Nationals. The 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA and one of only eight to survive the league's first decade. They have won three NBA championships, with their first coming as the Syracuse Nationals in 1955. The second title came in the 1966 season, with a team led by Chamberlain. The third title came in the 1982 season, won by a team led by Erving and Malone. They have only been back to the Finals once since 1982. During the 2001 season, a team led by Iverson and Mutombo lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. They have won nine conference titles and five division titles. The 76ers have retired eight numbers in their history.

The 76ers play at the Wells Fargo Center is the home arena of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League as well. The rivalry between the 76ers and Boston Celtics is the earliest dated rivalry in the NBA. The two teams have the most meetings in the NBA Playoffs, playing each other in nineteen series, of which the Celtics have won twelve. It is considered to be the 2nd greatest rivalry in the NBA next to the Celtics-Lakers rivalry. The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers have competition due to the proximity of the two teams. The Los Angeles Lakers are the Sixers\' biggest rival from the Western Conference.
