Hadestown Information
Hadestown is a Broadway musical depiction of love-struck in poverty and hardship. First premiered in Barre in 2006 and is based on the book, music, and lyrics by Anais Mitchell. That is after its production in Vergennes earlier that year, and doing tours between Vermont and Massachusetts in 2007.
Mitchell, unsure about the prospects of a musical, decided to make it a concept album and released it in 2010. Two years later, she met director Rachel Chavkin, and they decided to revisit the musical work and embarked on its stage production, adding more songs and dialogue to it.
The new version of Hadestown premiered Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, with Chavkin as the director and in charge of its stage production. It ran all through to July 31.
Hadestown speaks of the tales of Orpheus and Eurydice, during a Great Depression after an apocalyptic period. Orpheus is trying to persuade Eurydice to marry him, but she is skeptical given they are both poor, and she would have preferred to have a more stable life. Orpheus tells her he is working on a new song that will make spring come to life, and end their struggle. The plot thickens and ends up with Orpheus following Eurydice to the underworld to rescue her
