About Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville Speedway is a NASCAR stock car racing short track located in Henry County, Ridgeway, Virginia. The short track is under the ownership of International Speedway Corporation. The track broke ground in 1947 and opened for the public the same year. H. Clay Earles designed the architecture of the venue. It has a capacity of 44,000-65,000, which depends upon the configuration of the event. Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track in the NASCAR Cup Series and one of the first paved oval tracks in NASCAR. The race track was declared as the only one on the NASCAR circuit from its beginning in 1948. Martinsville Speedway features an Asphalt and Concrete surface. The asphalt surfaces are on the straightaways, whereas the concrete is used to cover the turns. Martinsville Speedway is often said to resemble the paper clip-shaped. It was paved in 1955; the next year, the short track hosted the very first 500-lap event. The first event by NASCAR sanctioned took place at the track on July 4, 1948. Richard Petty became the youngest winner in 1960 at the track. At that time, he was only 22 years old. Petty also takes pride in achieving the most wins (15). The oldest winner at the track is Harry Gant, who was 51 years old. Martinsville Speedway hosted Busch Series events from 1982 until 1994 and again in 2006. Some of the other major events hosted by the speedway include Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 and Xfinity 500 as NASCAR Cup Series; CookOut 250 and Draft Top 50 as NASCAR Xfinity Series; NASCAR Hall of Fame 200; and ValleyStar Credit Union 300 as NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
