The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is a notable Broadway theatre located in New York City. It is under the ownership and operated by Jujamcyn Theaters and opened for the public on November 24, 1925. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1,108 and was designed by Herbert J. The venue was built for the Shuberts as part of a theatre-hotel complex named after the 9th- century tragedian Edwin Forrest. On November 24, 1925, the Forrest Theatre opened with its premiere production, the musical Mayflowers. In 1945, the theatre was renamed the Coronet Theatre with renovations by architects Walker & Gillette. Again in 1959, the venue was rechristened the O'Neill in honor of the American playwright. The Book of Mormon achieved a box office record for the Eugene O'Neill Theatre due to a gross production of $2,161,225 over nine performances. Some of the other notable productions that took place at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre are 1934: Tobacco Road, 1947: All My Sons, 1952: The Children's Hour, 1953: The Little Hut, 1957: The Waltz of the Toreadors, 1968: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, 1971: The Prisoner of Second Avenue, 1980: I Ought to Be in Pictures, 1982: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 2005: Good Vibrations; Sweeney Todd, and 2009: 33 Variations; Fela!
